IBM Social Edition (NDNext)
Exciting IBM Social Business ReleaseThis is the next release of Lotus Notes Domino. Here are a couple highlights from the call I attended with IBM on 11/13/2012.
Moving forward, IBM has decided to leverage it's brand name (apparently about the third most recognized brand in the world). This release will be call IBM Social Edition. Yes, it's the next release of Notes and the Domino server. I suppose you could call is ND9. IBM will be conducting a public Beta beginning on Dec 14, 2012. Hurray! Back to public Betas! The plan is for a Gold release in the first half of 2013.
This release improves the look and feel of mail and calendars and adds new features to your usual use of Notes for mail, scheduling and contacts. There will be a new "plug-in" for the web browser that allows your web browser to function like a Notes client. That means, Notes applications will work in your web browser! We'll see how many of the functions will work untouched via the web browser. I even heard that you should be able to use the Notes Add-on in your web browser with your current 8.5.x Domino server implementation. That's cool.
IBM's stated direction is for us developers to begin developing with XPages because it gives better functionality in browsers and is extensible to mobile devices.
This will be a very exciting release. To the companies that are switching from Notes to Exchange right now...you may want to wait a bit, or loose out on awesome new technology.
